It is very likely that although your baby settles well at night in his cot, he just refuses to settle for his daytime naps in there. To have your baby go to sleep in the daytime in his cot or crib can be quite challenging, I’m not going to lie to you! But once you’ve cracked it, his naps times will become one of the most precious parts of your day giving you a good chunk of time to yourself, so it’s worth persevering.

If your baby already sleeps in his cot at nighttime, then I suggest you try and replicate the routine for his naptimes during the day for a couple of weeks or so.

THINGS YOU COULD TRY:

· You could get him into his cosy nightclothes (much more comfortable than day time clothes),

· Draw the curtains and make the room as dark as you can. I always used blackout blinds, which always worked a treat and helped my babies go to sleep.

· Put on a little lamp and sing him a few songs, or even read a cardboard book, which they love at a very early age or just cuddle and rock for a few minutes

· You could even give him some milk at this stage to settle him (either breast, bottle or cup depending on the age).

· Then put him down, tuck him in, say goodnight and close the door (they don’t get spooked at this age) or just do whatever your normal procedure is at the end of the day.

WHAT IF HE WON’T SETTLE?

· Go into him after 10 minutes but not before. Say quietly that he is to go to sleep, stroke his head, or back, say a few shhh, shhhh’s and then leave the room again

· If he carries on crying repeat the above every 10 minutes.

WHAT IF HE STILL DOESN’T SETTLE AND IT’S NEARLY THE END OF NAP TIME?

· If he’s still not settled and he’s absolutely exhausted then get him up, put him into his pram, or car chair or anything else that he will normally go to sleep in, and let your baby go to sleep until the rest of his naptime. Don’t let him oversleep otherwise you’ll have trouble getting him to bed in the evening.

· Try the same again the following nap, and the nap after that. Do persevere, as they will get into the habit of it.

TIP # 1: If you let your baby go to sleep in a car chair, then put him and the chair in the cot so he gets used to experiencing his cot in the daytime.

TIP # 2: Allow your baby to experience his cot outside of his ‘sleep time’. Pop a couple of toys in there and leave him to play (you can do this from day one). That way he will come to associate his bed as a nice place to be.
